|| English || Review: Yesterday we talked about the constitution and how it is a significant document to our nations literary history. Today I would like to discuss how the constitution serves as a basis for all of the literature that has been written in America since that time.
  • Questions for discussion- How has the constitution enabled writers to produce works on a wide variety of topics? What might we assume to be different about literature published under British rule? Further questions would be presented based off of student response.
  • Questions should lead to a discussion of Freedom of Speech. Discuss the importance this freedom holds for authors and how it may have expanded the creativity of literature as a whole. ie. led to creative fiction writings, established genres, etc..
  • Discussion and question time should take up most of the lesson. If any class time is left allow students to continue working on their constitution rough drafts.
  • Following discussion of Freedom of Speech present students with the following link to access the Bill of Rights.[[ http://www.ratical.org/co-globalize/BillOfRights.html| http://www.ratical.org/co-globalize/BillOfRights.html]]
Assignment for Tomorrow: follow the above link to access the Bill of Rights. After you have read the bill pick an amendment that you think impacted the future of literature. (How have books you read been shaped by this amendment.)The importance of Freedom of Speech will be an argument that all of you will be able to make. If anyone thinks they can make a case for another amendment feel free to do so. You might have to get creative here, but I will leave this assignment open-ended. The one thing your paper must do is present how your chosen amendment has impacted literature. (positive or negative) This should be a short reflection- about 1/2 page should be sufficient.
Also for tomorrow- your constitution rough drafts will be due. We will do peer editing in class and submit them at the end of the hour.
